Executive Order — Northern Bering Sea Climate Resilience

December 13, 2016

In a victory for our sponsored project Oceans 5, President Barack Obama issued an Executive Order committing the White House to protect and conserve the Bering Sea by working in partnership with indigenous communities.

This Executive Order will create a Northern Bering Sea Climate Resilience Area, encompassing 112,300 square miles that will be under protections related to oil, shipping, and fishing. In addition to the Obama Administration pledging $30 million in philanthropic commitments to projects in the region, the Department of Commerce has already deployed an Economic Development Assessment Team to Nome, Alaska to further address challenges and determine next steps in conservation. These actions will have a goal of preserving the region and its biodiversity, improving the resilience of the area and its native tribes, and supporting the indigenous communities through sustainable economic development.

Learn more about these actions in this fact sheet released by the White House.
