New in the Philanthropy Roadmap Series: Resources on Giving in Challenging Times, Collaborative Giving, and Operating for Impact

December 14, 2017

Continuing our practice of providing guidance on the most relevant issues in the philanthropic sector, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors has launched three new additions to our Philanthropy Roadmap series. Since the first guides were launched in 2011, they have been used as a reference for countless donors, institutions, students and public officials. With these three new additions, we address some of the most common questions and concerns posed by donors who want to create thoughtful, effective philanthropy.

  • Giving in Challenging Times offers guidance on creating philanthropic strategy in the face of uncertainty. While a previous version of this guide focused on giving in the wake of the global financial crisis of 2008, this updated version comes during a time of social crisis. With millions of people displaced from their homes due to violence or economic disparity, waning levels of confidence in political institutions, and an erosion in our sense of shared values, many donors are left questioning how to proceed. Emphasizing the importance of adaptability in thoughtful giving, this guide offers three core principles for giving in tumultuous times: Review, Recalibrate, and Recommit.
  • As more donors realize the benefits of pooling resources for greater impact, collaboration has become a growing trend in philanthropy. Our Collaborative Giving guide reviews the opportunities that come along with philanthropic partnerships, shares case studies to illustrate the advantages of successful collaboratives, and gives an overview for the process of aligning projects.
  • For those who are interested in becoming involved with philanthropy, the question of how to give can be daunting. Operating for Impact: Choosing a Giving Vehicle discusses the logistics behind several different giving methods, from establishing a foundation to impact investing and several other options in between. With this guide as a compass to assess pros and cons of each vehicle, donors are better equipped to choose an approach to giving that meets their needs and vision.

All three new guides, as well as the entire Philanthropy Roadmap collection, are available now on www.rockpa.org/philanthropy-roadmap.
